COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND CRITERIA

During the internship experience, candidates plan, teach and assess their instructional practices and strategies.  The grade for the internship is determined using the following criteria and percentages:

Course Attendance Policy:  More than one (1) unexcused absence (you must provide documentation so that absences are not counted as unexcused) will constitute a zero for the class participation grade. Excused absences are illness, death, and court appearance. Arriving late/leaving early will impact negatively on your grade. One tardy/early leave is allowed. More than one tardy/early leave will result in the lowering of the final course grade by one letter grade. More than two tardies/early leave will result in the lowering of the final course grade by two letter grades. More than three tardies/early leave will result in the lowering of the final course grade by three letter grades.

Academic Integrity:  Your enrollment in this class signifies that you accept the rules of academic honesty provided in the Helmsman. Any violation is grounds for an “F” in this course. Cheating on assignments, plagiarism, and other similar conduct will result in immediate dismissal from this course.

Disabilities Accommodations:  If you have a disability that may have some impact on your work in this class, and for which you may require accommodations, please see the instructor or Furman’s Disabilities Services Coordinator, so that such accommodations may be arranged.  In order to receive appropriate accommodations this term, it is imperative that you contact the Disabilities Services Coordinator or the instructor in a timely manner.

Title IX Reporting Responsibilities: Title IX prohibits gender discrimination, including sexual harassment, domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. If you have experienced sexual harassment or sexual violence, you can receive confidential support and advocacy at the Campus Chaplain’s Office (864-294-2133), the Counseling Center (864-294-3031), or the Earle Student Health Center (864-294-2180). You can also report gender discrimination directly to the University’s Title IX Office (864-294-2221). Faculty and Staff are required under the Policy on Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment to inform the Title IX Office should they become aware that you or any other student has experienced sexual violence or sexual harassment.

Technology Policy for In-Class Use

Use of cell phones (including text messaging), completing crossword puzzles, or engaging in other non-class-related activities is inappropriate and unprofessional behavior. Turn off your cell phone during class time unless it is being used for classroom activities.

Observations of Teaching:

Throughout the internship, teacher candidates will constantly have opportunities to present sequentially structured lessons using a variety of appropriate methods.  Some of these teaching situations will be observed and monitored by the instructor.  When possible, the observations will be followed by a conference.  The purpose of the conference is to provide immediate feedback.  At this time, you may also discuss other matters of concern.  A copy of all lesson plans must be ready for review at all times. These will be submitted for formal evaluation.

Teaching Requirements

Lesson Plans: (See Handbook) – Submit electronically in a .pdf document the night before the observation.

Reflections: (See Handbook for guidelines) - completed on blog

      Observation Form (See Handbook)

Formal observations are completed three times  during practicum.  Assessment, planning, differentiated instruction for each individualized educational plan is assessed. Student progress (during practicum) is evaluated.

Final Practicum Report (See Handbook):  This formally written report is comprised of pre-assessment data, a summary of what was taught, post-assessment data and recommendations for each student. These must be submitted electronically in a .pdf document on the last Wednesday by 7 pm. Final corrections need to be made by 9 pm. Once approved, you need to print them out and send them home with the student on Thursday.

Goals and Weekly reports to parents: These must be submitted electronically in a .pdf document on Wednesday by 7 pm. Final corrections need to be made by 9 pm. Once approved, you need to print them out and send them home with the student on Thursday. Each candidate will send home Summer Learning Place Goals written in behavioral, observable, and measurable format for each student in one’s class. The goals are based on background information available and will include any additional need to be attainable during the summer program. Remember to write in non-special education language. These must be approved by the professor before printing them out and sending them home.

Participation in seminars and professionalism:

Active and eager participation in seminars is expected. Preparing for students prior to each day and meeting all deadlines is expected. Professional behavior is assumed! Spelling and grammar errors drastically affect this grade!
